I love working online with painters and look forward to pulling up a chair, creating, and having a rich discussion around process.

Course Deets!

I almost didn't use the word course, because these aren't your conventional versions, but they are a three-hour experience that you will gain review access to where you will learn a great deal about my creative process, my problem-solving steps, and the strategies and products I use to explore ideas and subject matter.

For three hours we'll gather on Zoom and you will get a firsthand seat at my easel. I'll explain my entire process from beginning to end from ideation, sketch, exploration, and on to a finished small work. Each workshop will have a separate theme or subject matter and I'll break down those differences below. You'll be able to watch, paint along, ask questions in real time, and be challenged to create your version of the subject.

I'll also talk at length why your version matters, how to explore finding that, why my Journal of Interesting substrate matters a great deal, and how connecting with other creatives walking through the trenches can help build accountability and friendship. You'll can access to my PPOS, Push Past Ordinary School, where I'll be posting my primary creative content beginning February 2026. It's an AI free safe space to share, ask questions, and connect.

PULL UP A CHAIR!

EYE SEE YOU!

Pull Up A Chair will be an online viewing experience where you watch me process my ideas around the structure of chairs, the metaphor of what fascinates me with them, and how I incorporate collage, imperfection, color, and mark making into the process. Light and shadow will play a visual role as I want to convey form, but the entire scope will be embracing expression as opposed to exactness. I will use a photo reference, chat at length and show you the difference between sketching from imagination and memory to sketching using a reference, and I'll work with a specific color palette to push values and contrast. I'll be working on gessoed watercolor paper, using acrylics and mixed media, and will offer a supply list after the session.

Facial expression is always a fun subject to manipulate when it comes to characters. This session I'll be sharing my thoughts around loose, abstracted faces then shifting to using a reference photo to bridge light source and form. Eyes will be important, as well as facial structure, so I'll share my approach to shifting the direction of the gaze as well as bringing emphasis and drama to the piece through the eyes. I'll be sharing some resources I've made for attendees and will be using collage and mixed media on a pre-gessoed board.

My new Micro Bully rescue, Sir Phineus Nox, has been a huge source of inspiration for me and this session I'll put him front and center as the star of the show. From sketching his head, to capturing the essence of his spirit, I'll be exploring ways to do that by using photo references but also a very loose grip and approach to expression. Personality attributes will come into play as well as physical ones, because he is blind, so spectacles will be worn by my fur baby...and I'll show you how to paint those!

When attempting to capture a mood, chromatic darks and limited palettes go a long way for emotion. I'm going to be using yellow and purple, with a side of Paynes Grey on a figurative subject. There will be lots of drama...and lighting, but both will be by products of pushing the limited colors in dramatic ways. Water soluble pencils and blending techniques will be my tools of choice as well as fluid pigments. Think I'll start on a textured based of gesso as well.

Move the Line

Absinthe

Move the Line is a session that will focus on all the glorious aspects of dynamic movement, energy, and color. I'll be working ambidextrously to push expression and distortion, using some roque color combos, and incorporating complex systems and pattern into my piece. In The Land of Ardithian energy plays a pivotal role in the atmosphere and I'll be playing around with the Piglandiquatican version of this for sure.

If you have followed me over the years you know I have a love of the Green Fairy. This session I'll be taking a dip into all things green, exploring the warmer and cooler versions, and how they compete are play together. Glazing will be an important factor to push luminosity and I'll also be mixing green into other colors to create shadow realms. Fluid acrylics and heavy body with mediums will be my pigments of choice and I will most likely throw in some watercolor as well...definitely the green families.
